The Assam government has submitted a formal request to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate death of singer Zubeen Garg.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, “The Govt of Assam has submitted a formal request to the ministry of home affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities—giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice”.On Saturday evening, Zubeen Garg’s family filed a complaint with the Assam police seeking a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to Zubeen’s death in Singapore. The email complaint signed by Zubeen’s wife Garima, his sister Palmi Borthakur and his uncle Manoj Borthakur named Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma as the main accused and wanted to bring everyone, who were with Zubeen on that fateful day, within the ambit of the probe.Following the complaint, the CID team probing Zubeen’s death visited the deceased singer’s house and recorded the statement of the family members.Multiple FIRs have been registered against Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma in different police stations across Assam alleging negligence on their part which led to Zubeen’s death.Live EventsWhile Mahanta was the organiser of the Northeast festival in Singapore, Sharma was Garg’s manager.
