Actor Govardhan Asrani known as Asrani in Bollywood was born on January 1 1941 in Jaipur Rajasthan. He received his early education at St. Xaviers School in Jaipur and later graduated from Rajasthan College. After his studies Asrani began working as a radio artist. His wife is Manju Bansal Irani with whom he appeared in several films. Asrani appeared in over 300 Hindi and Gujarati films during his career and remained a part of the film industry for five decades. Political Journey Asrani was not only an actor but also a politician. He joined the Congress Party in 2004 and actively participated in the Lok Sabha elections. However his start in Bollywood wasnt easy. He debuted with Jaya Bhaduris film Guddi which was a hit and his acting was praised. Yet his struggles werent over. Rejection and Struggle in Bollywood On Komal Nahtas show Asrani revealed that many people including Gulzar didnt consider him a commercial actor. Gulzar rejected him calling his appearance weird. Director L. V. Prasad also said that Asrani didnt look like a hero a villain a comedian or a romantic role. Asrani laughingly recalled that he took the box back apologized and left. Recognition in South Cinema After rejection in Bollywood Asrani turned to the South Indian film industry where his talent was recognized. After working with prominent actors and directors there he was accepted in Bollywood as well. B. R. Chopra gave him a chance in Nikaah which was a hit. Directorial Ventures and Iconic Role Asrani also directed films like Hum Nahi Sudhrenge Dil Hi Toh Hai and Udaan. But his true identity was established with his role as the jailer in the Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra-starrer Sholay a role that remains deeply etched in the hearts of audiences. While Asrani is no longer with us these characters will always be with us bringing back memories of him.
