Asda confirms return of popular £1 deal that benefits over 60s in all 212 cafes

Asda has confirmed the return of a popular money-saving deal in all its 212 in store cafes. The initiative will help anyone over the 60 spread their budget further. With the colder weather officially arriving, the supermarket has brought back its viral 'Winter Warmers' scheme that will provide elderly customers with a hot meal and unlimited hot drinks all for just £1. Going available from November 1 until the end of February, customers over the age of 60 will be able to get a bowl of either tomato or chicken soup, with some bread and tea or coffee when visiting one of Asda's cafes. It will mark the fourth year in a row that the winter money-saving scheme has been available, as the supermarket first launched it in 2022, with popularity seeing it sell more than half a million meals last year (2024). Designed to support anyone over the the age of 60, it's not just about saving money, as Asda's community champions are inviting and encouraging anyone within this age group to use it as an opportunity to socialise with others. Alongside increased financial pressures during the winter, Asda's community tracker found last year that millions of the elderly suffer from a lack of human interaction in the build up to Christmas . The results highlighted that one in 10 respondents were not sure if they would speak to anyone between December 15 and January 1, with one in 10 over the age of 60 stating they go to the supermarket simply to speak to another person. Jordan Cummings - Buying Manager, Cafes and Concessions at Asda said: "We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income. "Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back this November, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others." It's just one of many deals that are available in all of Asda's 212 cafes across the UK, with over 60s also able to 10 percent off their meal when they visit one on Wednesday's. The supermarket giant also began to help families out by rolling out its popular Kids Eat For £1 meal deal all year round in 2023, with this year seeing it as low as 60p during the May half-term week. In another money-saving move, Asda announced earlier this month that it had just dropped prices by an average of six percent across 956 everyday groceries that are on many household shopping lists. This included key cupboard staples including pasta, cooking sauces, tea, pasta and tinned vegetables, while an additional 49 products from its 'Free From' range were also dropped in price, helping those with allergies to save some pennies. In other supermarket related news, Iceland is also helping the elderly to save some money during the difficult winter period over the next seven days. Until November 5, the frozen foods giant has confirmed that it has slashed the cost of 250 popular items for anyone over the age of 60, with staples such fish & chips and roast dinner favourites included. Asda's £1 'Winter Warmers' initiative for anyone over the age of 60 returns to cafes nationwide from November 1 until the end of February.
