Asamankese shooting: four people are detained

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has apprehended four individuals in relation to a violent shooting incident that transpired during the burial and funeral ceremonies of six family members at Asamankese in the Eastern Region. The event, which took place on Sunday, October 26, 2025, resulted in injuries to six civilians and three police officers after disorder broke out near the Chief’s Palace during the funeral. As per a statement issued by DSP David Fianko-Okyere, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Eastern South Regional Police Command, law enforcement received information indicating that certain individuals were bringing firearms and cartridges into a room adjacent to the Chief’s Palace. Officers were promptly dispatched to the location, where they apprehended suspects Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam (29), and Buaben Richard (25). The police also seized a single-barreled gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives. However, during the arrest, a group of angry youths assaulted the police officers with stones and other objects, resulting in injuries to three officers on their heads and hands. The mob also vandalized the windshields and side windows of two police vehicles. The youths reportedly obstructed the Asamankese–Akroso road and discharged firearms indiscriminately, asserting that the grieving family intended to inter their deceased relatives in the royal cemetery — a move they opposed. In the subsequent violence, six individuals, identified as David Odame (28), Musah Gyakweli (29), Patrick Ofosu, Obeng Emmanuel (18), Asamoah Sey (18), and one other person yet to be identified, suffered gunshot wounds. All victims are presently receiving medical care at the Asamankese Government Hospital. Authorities have stated that calm has been restored in the Asamankese township, with increased patrols and surveillance to maintain law and order. “The public is assured of a comprehensive security strategy in place to safeguard lives and property, allowing residents to carry out their daily activities,” the statement concluded. The four individuals suspected of involvement remain in custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigations.
