Art Basel Qatar to debut in February 2026 with landmark line-up of galleries and artists

Art Basel Qatar will make its debut in Doha in February 2026, bringing together the world’s leading contemporary artists, galleries, and cultural figures for the first time in Qatar. Doha is preparing to host the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar in February 2026, marking a significant milestone for the country’s cultural landscape and the wider Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia region. A preview breakfast held on Tuesday at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum offered an early glimpse into the fair’s scale and ambition. The gathering brought together global art leaders, local institutions, and artists, laying the groundwork for what promises to be a landmark celebration of creativity, dialogue, and artistic exchange. Among those in attendance were Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums; Sheikha Reem Al Thani, Deputy CEO of Exhibitions, Public Art and Rubaiya Qatar; Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel; and Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi, CEO of Visit Qatar. They were joined by a diverse group of leading regional and international artists, gallery representatives, and cultural figures. Speaking to Doha News, Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz highlighted the significance of the fair’s first edition in Qatar. “We have 87 galleries across over 80 projects, all with single artists, which is very unique for the Art Basel platform. We’re pleased to be doing this in Msheireb, between M7 and the Doha Design District, and it should be extraordinary,” He said. “We’ll create an Art Basel campus between single artist projects in gallery booths, mapped across other projects, installations, and performances, all programmed hand-in-hand with our partners at QC Plus and Qatar Museums. It should be an extraordinary week of cultural programming.” Horowitz noted that the fair will draw audiences from across the MENA region and around the world, emphasising its potential to cultivate a sustainable contemporary art market in Doha. The inaugural edition will feature 84 artist presentations by 87 galleries spanning 31 countries and territories, including 16 first-time participating galleries. Curated by Egyptian-born artist Wael Shawky, the fair reimagines the conventional booth format with an open-concept exhibition built around the theme ‘Becoming’. The curatorial theme explores transformation and how humanity continually redefines the ways we live, believe, and create meaning. It positions the Gulf as a cultural crossroads where tradition intersects with global networks and highlights art as both a witness to history and a catalyst for reimagining identity. Sheikha Reem Al Thani, Deputy CEO of Exhibitions, Public Art and Rubaiya Qatar, emphasised the fair’s importance for local and regional artists. “[Art Basel] will take place in February, and we’re very excited for it to happen here in Qatar as a meeting point and a nexus, especially for our younger artists,” she told Doha News. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Qatar Museums, the fair marks a milestone for cultural empowerment. “From both a local and regional perspective, it’s an important moment that will help artists gain recognition from new galleries, expanding beyond the region to reach the whole world,” she added. She also noted that Qatar is fully prepared to welcome a diverse range of guests as its cultural offerings continue to grow. Presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, with Visit Qatar as lead partner, the fair reflects a broader national vision. “This collaboration reflects our shared vision with Qatar Creates and Art Basel to position Qatar as a global meeting point for culture, creativity, and dialogue,” Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi, CEO of Visit Qatar, said during his speech at the preview breakfast on Tuesday. “Art Basel’s arrival in Doha marks a new chapter, bringing together the world’s foremost artists, curators, collectors, and cultural leaders to celebrate and shape the future of contemporary art.” The exhibition will span M7, the Doha Design District, and selected public sites in Msheireb Downtown Doha, inviting visitors to engage with storytelling, dialogue, and contemporary art in new ways. More than half of the participating presentations feature artists from the MENA and South Asia regions, including works by Etel Adnan, Ali Banisadr, Simone Fattal, Ali Cherri, Meriem Bennani, and Iman Issa. Regional galleries marking their Art Basel debut include Hafez Gallery (Jeddah, Riyadh), Gallery Misr (Cairo), Le Violon Bleu (Tunis), Saleh Barakat Gallery (Beirut), and Tabari Artspace (Dubai). They join a strong international lineup featuring Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Pace Gallery, David Zwirner, and White Cube.
