Ariana Grande's toughest struggle that only Taylor Swift understands

Ariana Grande is certainly the woman of the moment. A pop songstress with a back catalogue of hit albums and chart topping songs turned movie star with Oscar and BAFTA nominations to her name. As she chats to OK! magazine about life in the spotlight, it's clear that Ariana's long career - despite just being 32 - has taught her a lot about the highs and the lows that come with being a global icon. Only a few other women could truly relate to life in the spotlight as much as Ariana. Her love life has been the talk of the town for years, including her relationship with collaborator Mac Miller, who sadly died in 2018. There was her headline-hitting relationship with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson and three years later, when that romance fizzled out, she went on to marry real estate agent Dalton Gomez, who she later divorced. During her time on the set of Wicked, Ariana met Ethan Slater, who stars as Glinda's admirer Boq in the hit movie, in an art imitates life type moment. Another woman who is no doubt used to having her love life in the spotlight - and the subject of her songs - is singer Taylor Swift and Ariana certainly relates to the pop star's realisation that women are treated differently than their male counterparts. "I think there is a different expectation on us, especially for younger women in the industry. And if we speak out about treatment we have received, we can be labelled a diva. That's why it is so important as women that we keep on supporting and speaking out for each other," she tells us. Navigating relationships in the spotlight is something Ariana knows all too well - but not something she feels she could ever get used to. "Having relationships that are so heavily scrutinised is never easy, but you can only control what you can control," she explains to us, "All you can do is protect your privacy and relationship as much as you possibly can." Away from her personal life, Ariana's career has gone from strength to strength. She started out in Broadway as a teenager before gaining international fame for her role in Nickelodeon series Victorious and its spin off Sam & Cat. Following her success on TV, she turned to music, releasing her debut album in 2013, which went straight in at the top of the US charts. From there followed her other acclaimed albums including Dangerous Woman and Thank U, Next and a Grammy win for her 2018 album Sweetener. After a string of more successful music releases, in a full circle moment, she returned to acting. A dream since she was a little girl, Ariana recalled crying when she landed the role as Glinda in Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, which comes out on November 21. Her portrayal of the Good Witch earned her an Oscar, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nomination - but what makes acting and music both so special for her? "There is obviously a creative process to both, but in the way you prepare they are entirely different. When you are writing music it is about trying to get your experiences and emotions into a song," she says, "When you are trying to get into character it's about trying to become somebody else, what makes them tick, what's going on in their head, what are their motives." One thing is clear. The most Wicked chapter of Ariana's life so far might be over - but Glinda will be standing alongside Ariana wherever she lands next in her magical bubble and with a wand in her hand.
