Dr. Jorge Alió led this online congress, which was held last week with 124 national and international ophthalmology experts For three days, the conference will discuss childhood myopia, artificial intelligence in ocular diagnosis, keratoconus treatment, cutting-edge EDOF lenses, and glaucoma, among other topics of interest Alicante once again establishes itself as the world’s epicenter of ophthalmology knowledge with the 23rd Alicante Refractive International ( ARI ) Congress , a 100 % online event that began today and will run until October 25th, under the scientific direction of Prof. Jorge Alió. This meeting, consolidated as one of the most relevant digital congresses in anterior segment surgery, will bring together 124 experts, 54 national and 70 international, and will offer a comprehensive free training program, available in Spanish and English. “It is probably the most important online congress in Europe, and even worldwide, on topics related to surgery and the study of the anterior segment of the eye: cornea, cataracts, intraocular lenses, surgical defects, and glaucoma,” explains the professor of Ophthalmology and Honorary Researcher at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche. ARI 2025’s digital format breaks down geographic and time barriers, facilitating access for professionals from around the world through its exclusive medical education platform. At its last edition, the congress attracted 29,300 visitors from countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Germany, and the United States, making it a global platform for continuing education. This year’s edition includes twelve thematic sessions, organized into five main areas: developments in clinical optometry, cornea and ocular surface, anterior segment surgery, refractive surgery, and finally, lens surgery and intraocular lenses. Current topics will be covered, such as the progression of childhood myopia, artificial intelligence in ocular diagnosis, new techniques for the treatment of keratoconus, the latest generation EDOF lenses, and the approach to glaucoma from a lens-based perspective. Confirmed speakers include leading names such as David Chang (USA), Farhad Hafezi (Switzerland), George Waring IV (USA), Courtney Kraus (USA), Shady Awwad (Lebanon), Burkhard Dick (Germany), Rafael Barraquer (Spain), and Renato Ambrósio JR (Brazil), among many others. All of them will share clinical advances, multicenter studies, surgical experiences, and highly complex clinical cases. This conference is broadcast from Vissum Miranza Alicante, with the academic support of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche. It is linked to the online university course ‘Clinical Refractive, Cataract and Corneal Surgery Course’, accredited with ECMECs credits for Continuing Medical Education at the European level. This course, running for more than twelve years, reinforces the commitment of Dr. Alió and his team to innovation, teaching quality, and open access to scientific knowledge. It is worth mentioning that this year’s poster features the drawing ‘La mirada verde’ (Green Gaze) by Mika Rodríguez de Linares Yoneda, a girl who won an award in the 4th ‘Miradas Infantil’ (Children’s Gaze) 2023 Contest organized by the Jorge Alió Foundation. This is yet another example of their involvement in issues related to ophthalmology and vision through the various areas of their work.
