Keene High field hockey tops Portsmouth

The Keene High School field hockey team scored a 4-0 shutout win over Portsmouth High School Wednesday.

Lola Ballaro and Lilly Vitters each scored their first goals of their high school careers, Scarlett Miller and McKenna Nelson each finished up with a goal and an assist, Olive Thatcher and Vitters each had an assist and Dayna English finished with one save and her third shutout of the season.

The next game up is at Concord High School on Monday.

KHS volleyball wins first set of the season

Having won just one set all season last year, the Blackbirds of Keene High School took to the volleyball court Wednesday night in Keene facing the Cavaliers of Hollis-Brookline.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a quick lead, 3-5, but Keene answered when setter Avery Dunham got to the line and pushed the Blackbirds to an 11-5 lead. The set went into extra points but after being tied at 24 the Blackbirds pushed ahead to win their first set of the year with a set score of 26-24. Keene fought tough but lost the next three sets with set scores of 18-25, 23-25 and 21-25 respectively.

Leading the charge for the Blackbirds was Kayla Smith with 5 kills, 12 digs, 2 blocks, an ace and 13 successful serve receives. Lucia Pierannunzi had 3 aces, 2 kills, 7 assists, 6 digs and a block, while Avery Dunham had 5 aces, 3 assists and a kill. Violet Perry had 3 blocks and 3 kills, including a kill to end the 1st set victory, and Grace Frock had an ace, 4 kills and 3 blocks. Elise Pratt, wearing the libero jersey Wednesday night, played hard and had 11 digs, 16 successful serve receives and a back row freeball kill.

The Blackbirds next host Dover Friday.

KHS boys cross country shines in tri-meet

The Keene High School boys cross country team placed the top five places in a tri-meet with Nashua South and Bishop Guertin on Tuesday at Nashua South High School, and Keene’s record on the season improved to an impressive 7-0.

Keene runners took the first five places:

1. Sullivan Sturtz — 16:21.7

2. Sawyer Kress — 16:33.8

3. Tristan Woodbury — 17:11.5

4. Aiden O’Donnell — 17:22.1

5. Gavin Morton — 17:31.8

Also placing:

10. Wade Plaskiewicz — 18:03.2

11. Gus Cusimano — 18:29.5

Keene will next compete in the Amherst Invitational on Saturday on the campus of UMass — Amherst. Races will begin at 10 a.m. with separate freshman, varsity and junior varsity races to be run.

Keene Unified Soccer team bests Londonderry

The Keene Unified Soccer team bested Londonderry 5-3 on Wednesday.

Sam Files scored once, Dylan White scored twice, Dallas Gee scored once and Allyssia Dubberly scored once.
