Apple Reportedly Testing OLED Displays For Future iPads And MacBooks: All We Know So Far

Apple seems to be preparing for some major display upgrades across its popular product lineup. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the tech giant is currently testing OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays for future versions of the MacBook Air, iPad Air, and iPad mini. If true, this could mark one of Apple’s biggest visual upgrades in years, offering users richer colours, deeper blacks and sharper contrast compared to the current LCD panels. Here’s everything we know so far about Apple’s OLED plans. iPad Mini Could Be The First To Get OLED Among all the devices being tested, the iPad mini appears to be first in line for the OLED treatment. As per the report, Apple could launch an OLED-equipped iPad mini as early as 2026, marking a major leap in display quality for the compact tablet. However, this improvement may come at a cost. OLED panels are significantly more expensive than LCDs, and the new iPad mini could see a price hike of around $100. The last iPad mini refresh came in late 2024, featuring a faster chip and Apple Intelligence support. That said, Apple’s timelines often shift during development, so while 2026 seems likely, it isn’t set in stone. iPad Air OLED Upgrade May Come Later The iPad Air isn’t expected to join the OLED club just yet. Its next update, likely to arrive in spring 2026, will reportedly continue using an LCD panel. A future generation, however, could switch to OLED, possibly by 2027 or later. Meanwhile, Apple’s entry-level iPad will stick with LCD displays for the foreseeable future to maintain affordability. MacBook Pro And Air To Follow With OLED Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup is also on track to receive the OLED treatment, but not before its next redesign. The report suggests that the MacBook Pro with M6 chip and OLED display could debut by the end of 2026, potentially with a touchscreen option for the first time in a MacBook. Once that’s done, the MacBook Air will be next. However, users may need to wait a bit longer, until 2028, to see an OLED version of the Air. The 2026 MacBook Air refresh will likely retain its existing LCD panel paired with the upcoming M6 chip.
