Apple, on the other hand, has progressed with a different mindset, which ultimately helped develop its A-series chipsets, followed by the C1 and C1X 5G modems, and lastly, the N1 wireless chip. The same approach will be applied when working on a custom camera, with a rumor claiming that the Cupertino firm is developing a high-resolution 100MP LOFIC unit, likely for future iPhones. The latest rumor claims Apple’s 100MP camera is not expected until 2028; Samsung would launch a solution before its biggest competitor in the smartphone space The California-based giant’s current supply chain for cameras only includes Sony for now, but Samsung has been reported to enter into a partnership with the iPhone maker, with mass production scheduled to happen in 2027. The Korean giant was earlier rumored to be developing a 3-layer stacked sensor for Apple, with the technology being more advanced than Sony’s cameras found in current-generation iPhones. Apple may leverage the expertise obtained by keeping both manufacturers in its supply chain because Weibo tipster says that the company’s in-house 100MP LOFIC sensor will arrive in 2028. However, before this camera materializes, Apple’s rivals are developing their solutions, with Android phone makers OPPO and Vivo developing LOFIC units, with Sony also working on a camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor that is scheduled to launch by the end of 2026. As for Samsung, it is developing a 200MP LOFIC camera with a 1/1.1-inch sensor size, estimated to arrive in 2026 or 2027. From this angle, Apple is significantly behind the competition, but it is not the first time the technology titan has been late to the party, as it has developed a habit of adopting certain standards much later than the competition. Apple’s 100MP LOFIC camera is said to support variable aperture technology, which will reportedly debut in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max next year, meaning that the company has plenty of time to refine its custom solution. Also, it is not like the company does not have any experience building custom modules because it used specialized equipment for its F1 film that comprised of an unnamed A-series SoC to record in ProRes lossless format. Now, all that remains is to shrink this module to fit a smartphone, along with a plethora of changes, and we will be off to the races. News Source: Digital Chat Station
