APM Terminals Donates Life-Saving Medical Equipment to Lagos Health Centre

APM Terminals Apapa has donated essential medical equipment to the Simpson Primary Healthcare Centre in Ebute Metta, Lagos, as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility drive to support maternal health and strengthen healthcare delivery in its host communities. Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Mr. Frederik Klinke, said the donation reflects the company’s strong commitment to improving the quality of life of people living around its operational areas. He noted that the initiative aligns with APM Terminals’ global mission of contributing to sustainable community development through targeted health, education, and environmental projects. APM Terminals, a subsidiary of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, is one of the world’s leading container terminal operators. In Nigeria, the company manages the Apapa Container Terminal and provides logistics, container handling, and supply chain services to importers, exporters, and shipping lines. Its facilities have undergone major upgrades and expansions to enhance productivity and efficiency, positioning it as a key player in Nigeria’s maritime and logistics industry. Mr. Klinke explained that APM Terminals has consistently invested in healthcare infrastructure within Lagos, installing power systems and renovating medical facilities to improve service delivery. He expressed optimism that the new medical equipment will help increase the survival rate of mothers and newborns at the Simpson Primary Healthcare Centre. “We are proud of the investment and the work done here to increase the survival rate of children,” Klinke said. “I hope the community will maintain the equipment and put it to good use.” Also speaking, the Terminal Manager of APM Terminals Apapa, Mr. Steen Knudsen, said the company’s CSR strategy focuses on three key areas — health, education, and the environment. He explained that the donation to the Simpson Healthcare Centre is in line with the United Nations Population Fund’s ‘10 Million Safer Births Initiative’, which was launched in Nigeria by Her Majesty Queen Mary of Denmark during her visit to the country in June 2025. According to Knudsen, the initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate by equipping healthcare centres with modern tools and improving the skills of health workers to ensure safer and more efficient childbirth care. He added that APM Terminals’ intervention is part of a broader effort to support the Lagos State Government’s goal of enhancing access to quality healthcare, particularly for women and children in low-income communities. The Permanent Secretary of Lagos Health District IV, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, commended APM Terminals Apapa for the gesture, describing it as an exemplary partnership between the public and private sectors. “Your decision to invest in Simpson Primary Healthcare Centre, Ebute Metta, is an act of visionary leadership,” Dr. Bowale said. “The community will benefit greatly, and this project should stand as an example for others to emulate.” Similarly, a representative of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Mrs. Shakirat Adeosun, said the renovation and equipping of the Simpson Centre were achieved through a strong collaboration between APM Terminals and the Lagos State Government. She noted that this marks the first phase of APMT’s health intervention in the community, with a second phase planned to upgrade the laboratories to improve diagnostic and maternal healthcare services. The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mr. Jubril Emilagba, also praised APM Terminals for its consistent support for the community. “We appreciate your partnership and assure you that your name will continue to be promoted positively within the community,” he said. The Medical Officer in charge of the Simpson Centre, Dr. Tunde Osoba, described the donation as a “life-saving intervention.” He expressed deep gratitude to APM Terminals, assuring that the medical staff would ensure proper maintenance and utilisation of the donated equipment. “We are truly grateful and appeal for continued support, as many of those who need these facilities cannot afford them,” Dr. Osoba said. “With this equipment, we can now reach more people and save more lives.” The Medical Advisor at APM Terminals Nigeria, Mr. Layi Ogunjobi, disclosed that the company has engaged a consultant to monitor the use and maintenance of the equipment over the next two to three years to ensure accountability, transparency, and sustainability of the project. He added that the company’s goal is not only to donate medical equipment but also to ensure that such facilities continue to deliver meaningful and measurable impact in the long term. Through this initiative, APM Terminals Apapa continues to demonstrate leadership in corporate citizenship by investing in people and promoting inclusive development in Nigeria’s maritime communities.
