Even after 26 seasons, the thrill of nabbing a late-game care package weapon in Apex Legends remains. Even the most hesitant and cautious players can be imbued with the confidence and aggression of an ALGS pro with one of these powerful guns in their hands. However, Respawn's cooked up a proper head-turner for Apex Legends Season 27. Speaking to PCGamesN, weapons designer Casey O'Brien reveals that the CAR SMG will be heading into the care package, but with a wild twist on its dual ammo gimmick. With the Double Tap hop-up returning and getting slapped on the Alternator, it feels like Apex Legends' weapons team is really having an experimental season - or the devs wrote their section of the patch notes in a bar… Either way, Season 27 sounds like fun, and you can't continue to be one of the best battle royale games without some surprises and innovation. More on the Alternator later, but right now, we've gotta talk about that care package CAR. Replacing the Triple Take, which will go back to being floor loot, O'Brien confirms the CAR will be a new, "very exciting" care package gun. She teases that, similar to how it can swap between light and heavy ammo, "it's gonna retain that swap of power in the [care] package in a super sick way." While she initially tells us that she's not going to "spoil too much," another dev on our video call, lead game designer Eric Canavese, tells her to throw caution to the wind. "I'm sorry," she says. "That's just the kind of person I am! It's gonna get Disruptor rounds, and you can toggle between Disruptors and Hammer Points." Yes, you read that correctly - the care package CAR will let you swap between two devastating fire modes instead of just switching ammo type. Spicy. As mentioned, the other big weapon change hitting Season 27 is that the Alternator can now run the Double Tap hop-up. Already a reliable SMG, this will crank up its fire rate and damage output considerably. On the Alternator, Double Tap will work a little differently, as it makes both of the gun's barrels fire a bullet at the same time rather than (as the name suggests) alternately. That sounds like a recipe for a meta-dominating close-range weapon, but O'Brien ensures that it won't be as overpowered as it sounds, and certainly won't crush opponents like the Disruptor used to. "As opposed to the Disruptor, which was just raw power, I do think that the Double Tap has some interesting, almost self-built-in drawbacks and benefits, more so than Disruptor did," she says. "It's really cool [with] some really interesting mechanics. And don't want to spoil too much, because it's gonna be really exciting […] and I am expecting power levels are going to be high, but I think it's going to be arguably more fun and interesting for players, rather than just like the raw power the Disruptor brought."
