Anurag Kashyap On Actresses Being Typecast: ‘50 Saal Ki Aurtein Aur Heroine Nahi Ban Sakti Kya’

Anurag Kashyap never minces his words when opening up about his honest opinions on issues related to his filmmaking career or the film industry. As he is busy promoting his film, Nishaanchi, set for a release on September 19, the recipient of four Filmfare awards revealed how actresses are typecast in the industry.
In a recent conversation, Anurag Kashyap was asked to comment on a few celebrities, including Alia Bhatt. While talking about her, the filmmaker revealed that he wants to clap for her and the way she has been managing her multiple roles in life and also talked about how actresses are typecast in Bollywood.
“Why should marriage, relationship, motherhood, or anything should affect an actor’s career? And why actresses in particular? Itne salon se chala aa raha hai, yahape typecasting jo hota hai itna (It’s been going on for years. We face a lot of typecasting in our film industry),” he told Filmygyan.

He continued, “Maa ka role karne ke liye kitna difficult hota hai kisiko dhundna (It’s very difficult to find an actress for the mother’s role). Even in their 50s, actresses get typecast and are only looked at for mother roles. 50 salon ki aurtein aur heroine nhi ban sakti kya (Can’t a 50-year-old woman be a heroine)?”

Anurag Kashyap Praises Neena Gupta, Shefali Shah And Other Actresses
In the same conversation, he added, “Shefali Shah Delhi Crime mein hero nhi hai kya? Kareena Kapoor kya hero nhi bann sakti (Isn’t there a hero in Delhi Crime? Can’t Kareena Kapoor be a hero)?”
This is when the interviewer interrupted and mentioned the name of Neena Gupta. To which, Kashyap nodded in affirmation and shared, “Neena Gupta, Badhai Ho, Unko kisine pehele aese dekha tha? I mean koi bhi kar sakta hai, kuch bhi kar sakta hai (No one has seen her before. Anyone can do anything). Why should age or gender limit anything?”

When Neena Gupta Said Anurag Kashyap Wanted To Take Older Actors In Saand Ki Aankh
This is not the first time that Kashyap voiced his opinion on this matter. After the trailer of Saand Ki Aankh was released, a section of society wasn’t happy with Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s casting as real-life ‘shooter daadis’ Prakashi Tomar and Chandro Tomar in the movie. Amid the controversy, actress Neena Gupta’s tweet “Hamari umar ke role toh kamse kam humse kara lo bhai (At least let us play roles of our age)” went viral.
When she sat for an interview the next year, Gupta revealed that Anurag Kashyap, who co-produced the movie, wanted to cast older actresses.
“Film industry is business. If you sell, you are taken into a film, if you don’t then you are not taken. When Anurag announced this film Saand Ki Aankh, I called him and said ‘Ye role to mai kar sakti hu, kya tum young ka kar rahe ho ya old ka kar rahe ho(I can do this role, are you tracing the younger part of their lives or the older one)?’” Gupta told Hindustan Times.
Revealing Kashyap’s response, she added, “He said, ‘I wanted to take older actors but my financiers said you have to take younger girls’. So it is business – who is suited to the project is taken.”
