Please put the text of the obituary in a Word document, a Google document or in the body of the email. The Reading Eagle also requires a way to verify the death, so please include either the phone number of the funeral home or cremation service that is in charge of the deceased's care or a photo of his/her death certificate. We also request that your full name, phone number and address are all included in this email. All payments by families must be made with a credit card. We will send a proof of the completed obituary before we require payment. The obituary cannot run, however, until we receive payment in full. Obituaries can be submitted for any future date, but they must be received no later than 3:00 p.m. the day prior to its running for it to be published. Please call the obituary desk, at 610-371-5018, for information on pricing. I decided to take part in Saturday’s No Kings rally in Kutztown. Republican leaders in Washington are accusing No Kings demonstrators of being paid by George Soros, Hamas supporters and “antifa.” The truth is that much of the Kutztown crowd consisted of old retired folks like me. We retirees can’t be fired for expressing our belief that President Donald Trump is a danger to democracy. Each of us may have a different reason for protesting. It could be Trump’s attacks on the trans community. It might be because Spanish-speaking people, including U.S. citizens, are being roughed up by heavily armed and masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. It might be the disgrace of Jan 6, 2021, or Trump’s dismantling of the Department of Education, Voice of America, or the U.S. Agency for International Development. There are many reasons to be very concerned about this country’s direction. This is not “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” I get angry about crypto coins enriching the Trump family at the expense of gullible investors. Yes, Trump won in 2024, but he did not get the mandate he claims. He had 49.86% of the vote to Kamala Harris’ 48.34%. That slim margin doesn’t give him the right to govern like a dictator. The conservative columnist David Brooks wrote that the Trump administration “operates as a national extortion racket.” I agree. If you believe there is no place for monarchs or mob bosses in America, let your neighbors know.
