Jackson was a third-round pick from Cincinnati's 2024 NFL Draft class. Wide receiver Jermaine Burton was picked earlier in the round at 80th overall, and Jackson was selected 97th overall with the compensatory pick the Bengals received for losing Jessie Bates III in free agency the year prior. Jackson is also not the only player on the roster looking for a change. Linebacker Logan Wilson requested a trade last week after being benched for rookie Barrett Carter. This trade request isn't too dissimilar in nature. Why McKinnley Jackson is the next Bengals player to request a trade Jackson has been a non-factor for Cincinnati's season thus far. He's been a healthy inactive for six of the club's eight games and has only played in one of the games he dressed for. He came on the field for six defensive snaps in the Bengals' Week 5 loss to the Detroit Lions. While Kris Jenkins Jr., picked in the second round of the same draft, is averaging over 30 snaps a game, Jackson is watching from the sideline in street clothes. Jackson's not been involved in new defensive coordinator Al Golden's plans, and in defense of Golden, he had no involvement in drafting Jackson last year. The timing of Jackson's request is notable as well. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 4, and Cincinnati is coming off a discouraging loss to the New York Jets. The Bengals' defense also conducted a players-only meeting earlier in the week.Perhaps more importantly, Mike Pennel requested his release and was granted it Tuesday. Pennel was backing up nose tackle T.J. Slaton Jr., and if Jackson wants his exodus now, it seems like he's not going to be Slaton's backup. Jordan Jefferson projects to fill that role. Jackson has only played in 14 career games and hardly had any recent tape attached to his name. His trade value is minimal at this point in his career, and the Bengals are unlikely to release a player they spent a top-100 pick on just last year. Odds point to the 23-year old having to stick around and await opportunity for the time being.
