Anita Dobson says 'it's important' as she shares Brian May health update after stroke

Anita Dobson has provided a touching update on her husband Sir Brian May's recovery following the Queen guitarist's stroke last year. The 78-year-old rock legend revealed in an Instagram post in September 2024 that he had lost control of one arm after experiencing a "minor stroke". Sir Brian described the health scare as "a little scary" in a video shared to Instagram on September 4, though he has since appeared to bounce back, regularly posting updates on social media showing him enjoying various outings. Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Anita, 76, revealed her husband of nearly 25 years has been faithfully adhering to medical guidance since the frightening episode. "He takes his tablets, does his exercises. He's a good boy," the EastEnders actress said lovingly, reports the Express. When asked whether she needs to remind him, she added: "Sometimes with the tablets. I'm not often dictatorial but it's important, because it's his life." Dobson and May first crossed paths in the late 1980s at a film premiere before tying the knot in 2000. Later this month, the pair will mark their silver wedding anniversary — a milestone that demonstrates their lasting connection. She serves as stepmother to May's three children from his first marriage to Chrissie Mullen, and the couple's relationship has long been celebrated for its mutual admiration and playful banter. "He's a genius and I make the tea," she quipped. "We're completely mismatched, but we're devoted to one another." The couple have endured numerous trials together, from the demands of fame to medical emergencies and even the devastating loss of cherished belongings. In 2021, the basement of their Kensington property was inundated with sewage during a ferocious storm, ruining precious keepsakes stored below. Devastated, they made the decision to move to Surrey. For Dobson, a true East End lass, rural living represented a massive adjustment. But for May, whose passions beyond Queen encompass astrophysics and wildlife activism, it was love at first sight. "He didn't even go into the house, just fell in love with the trees, the flowers, the grass, the lake," Dobson recalled of their 200-acre property. "His face said it all. I have never seen a man happier. How could I take him away from that? Because I love my husband." Despite his recent health troubles, May continues to inspire both on stage and off. Dobson glows with pride when remembering his surprise appearance at the Proms last summer. "Wasn't it fabulous? One of his finest moments," she said. "At home we look like a pair of hobos – Brian comes in from the garden with twigs in his hair. But he looked beautiful on the stage. And there you go, you fall in love with the man all over again." Anita made her spectacular comeback to EastEnders as Queen Vic landlady Angie Watts during the BBC soap's 40th anniversary. Dobson appeared as a vision when her adopted daughter Sharon Watts, played by Letitia Dean, was wounded in a pub blast. In February, she made a nostalgic return to Walford after more than 30 years, donning the original outfit her character wore back in 1985 — complete with a striped shirt and blazer.
