Andrew Vine is the jockey that racing forgot. He died before his day in court

Vine is the jockey that racing forgot. His death on August 23 barely caused a ripple in the sport.

He did not ride in Melbourne Cups, compete in group 1 events or even make it into the senior ranks. His brief contribution was largely lost in time.

But not for Green. He shared a stable dorm with Vine at Caulfield when they were teenagers during the 1970s and for the next 50 years they remained each other’s “lifeline” and testament to troubled and abusive pasts.

On Friday, Green battled through tears to pay tribute to his oldest friend and to give meaning to his former roommate’s challenging life.
