Amul slashes prices of 700-plus products after GST cut

Deciding to pass on the benefit of a reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) to its customers, Amul, India’s largest food brand, on Saturday announced a cut in prices of 700-plus products. While the reduction ranges between 3-10 per cent for UHT milk and milk products, the price cut is as high as 17 per cent for frozen snacks sold by the brand.

This revision in prices is across the range of product categories like Butter, Ghee, UHT milk, Ice cream, Cheese, Paneer, Chocolates, Bakery range, Frozen dairy and Potato snacks, Condensed milk, Peanut spread and Malt-based drink, among others. “As a cooperative owned by 36 lakh farmers, Amul believes the reduction in prices will spur consumption of a wide range of dairy products, particularly ice cream, cheese and butter, as the per capita consumption remains very low in India, creating a large growth opportunity. The reduction in GST will help to increase Amul’s share of the consumers’ revenue to the producer in a much larger way, so it benefits both producers and consumers,” the brand stated in an official release.

Amul’s price cut follows price reductions announced by major brands like Mother Dairy. While GST levied on Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) milk and Paneer was reduced to zero, Amul has cut prices of one litre tetrapack of Amul Taaza Toned UHT Milk by 2.6 per cent and that of Amul Gold Standardised UHT Milk by 3.6 per cent. The price of a kilogram of diced frozen paneer has been slashed by 3.3 per cent, while the cost of 200 grams of Amul Malai Paneer Dice has been reduced by four per cent, as per the new prices effective September 22.

The price of a 55ml vanilla cup of Amul ice cream will cost 10 per cent less, while there is a 7.7 per cent reduction for a one litre pack. The prices of Butter and Ghee have been reduced by over 6 per cent. The cost of a kilogram of cheese has been slashed by 5 per cent

Among other items, the price of Amul Dark Chocolates will be reduced by 10 per cent, while products in its bakery range will be costing about 11 per cent less. The highest decline seems to be in the Frozen Snack range where the cost of Amul Paneer Paratha (500 gms) has been slashed by 16.6 per cent, while that of Amul French Fries (1.25 kilogram) has been reduced by 7 per cent.

The brand stated that it has communicated the changes in prices to its trade partners including distributors, Amul Parlours and retailers across India.
