American who loves Welsh city left floored by German tourists' question about Tom Jones

An American who regularly visits different corners of the UK was left stunned when she witnessed fellow tourists’ response to a Tom Jones concert advertisement.

Cara, who runs The Magic Geekdom YouTube channel, described spending an “absolutely perfect day” in Cardiff. Speaking to her 78,600 followers, she declared: “I went to Cardiff on what turned out to be the perfect day, and honestly? This city is seriously so cool!”

She went on to detail how she wandered through the Victorian arcades, visited Spillers Records – the globe’s oldest record shop – enjoyed a ferris wheel ride and embarked on a high-speed boat excursion, among numerous other activities.

However, it was an incident at the start of her day that almost rendered her speechless.

She arrived to discover a banner at Cardiff Castle announcing that evening’s Tom Jones performance was completely sold out.

Although she’d missed her chance, she was entertained by the sight of some visitors frantically searching online to identify the legendary It’s Not Unusual performer.

“Oh no, I missed Tom Jones,” she remarked. “I am actually legitimately sad about that. I mean, it was sold out anyways but that would have been a fun show to see in Wales.

“I’m also very amused that the German people who were standing next to me were Googling who Tom Jones is. Come on guys, you don’t know Tom Jones in Germany?”

Cara then headed to Castle Arcade where she sampled some traditional sweet delicacies at Fabulous Welshcakes.

Her next destination was Cardiff Market, which she described as offering a “little bit of everything” as she perused the record shops, vintage clothing stalls, and traditional fishmongers and butchers.

Next on her itinerary was the Museum of Cardiff, followed by a stroll through Morgan Quarter, where she remarked: “One of the things I love about Cardiff is how nice the city centre is.

“It is so pedestrianised, there is all kinds of shops. There are just loads of really good vibes, beautiful architecture. I mean look at this building right here, if that’s not the fanciest TK Maxx I’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is.”

She added: “I have never seen a TJ Maxx in the US be in such a cool building.”

Cara, who recently had a trip to Pembrokeshire where the cost of ice cream took her aback, concluded her day at Cardiff Bay.

From atop the ferris wheel, she exclaimed: “What a view, I love it. This might be one of my favourite locations to do a ferris wheel yet.”

Following her speed boat ride, she reflected: “Today ended up being pretty perfect. I had so much fun. I really truly love Cardiff there is so much to love about it.”

The entire trip was so enjoyable, Cara added: “Cardiff packed so much into one day that I’m genuinely considering whether I should just move here.”

After posing the question to her viewers in a video you can watch in full here, one person responded: “I moved to Cardiff temporarily 6 years ago….. fell in love with it and I’m still here!”.

Another penned: “Welsh here. Went to uni in Cardiff and now live in Bridgend 20-30 mins away. I love Cardiff. It’s such a great city. My older kids love going down on the train with their friends now, just like I did as a teen. Glad you like it too.”

And a third chimed in with: “My daughter is at Cardiff Uni, and she has fallen in love with Cardiff and Wales.”
