Amazon quietly launches doorstep returns — here’s what it means for shoppers

Global Desk Amazon has quietly started a new doorstep return service where customers don’t have to leave their homes to send back products. The service first began during the summer, but Amazon has not mentioned it anywhere on its official website. Amazon partnered with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to make this new return method possible, as per The Sun. Items that weigh between one and 15 pounds are eligible for the USPS doorstep pickup option. The doorstep return system is available only in select areas for now, but Amazon has not revealed which regions currently have it.A shopper from Nashville, Tennessee, shared on LinkedIn that they had used the new service, writing, “Looks like United States Postal Service has now replaced UPS as the default Amazon returns pickup service?” The same shopper also asked, “Is this just here in Nashville and other test markets or nationwide?” The LinkedIn post included photos showing the return label, return instructions, and all the available Amazon return options. How it worksThe new pickup option needs a box and a printed label before scheduling a pickup. According to USPS return instructions, shoppers must put the item in a box, print the return label, and schedule a pickup with USPS. The USPS instructions clearly say, “USPS Pickup will make 1 pickup attempt(s) in the next 2 business days.” It also mentions, “An adult must be present for the pickup.” If the pickup fails once, “you can use the label to drop your return at any USPS Post Office.”An Amazon spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive, “We’re always listening to customers and looking for ways to make returns even more convenient.” Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The U.S. Sun.
