Amazon Layoffs: Tech Giant Set To Fire 14,000 Employees; Here's What You Need To Know

The e-commerce giant, Amazon, has said that it will reduce its corporate workforce by 14,000 employees, according to a Bloomberg report released on Tuesday, citing the company’s senior vice president of People Experience and Technology, Beth Galetti's blog post. Beth Galetti wrote in the blog post, “The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs.” Broader Trend Under Andy Jassy While Amazon stated the immediate cuts are around 14,000 roles, reports from Reuters suggest the number could climb as high as 30,000. The company employed approximately 1.55 million people worldwide as of June 30. These reductions come as part of a broader trend under CEO Andy Jassy, who has overseen multiple rounds of job eliminations since his tenure began. Jassy has made no secret of his aim to shrink reliance on human labour and grow automation efforts, particularly as the company shifts its strategy toward artificial intelligence and other technologies. Many insiders say Amazon still carries staffing levels inflated by the pandemic hiring surge, despite cutting tens of thousands of positions over the past few years, as per the Bloomberg report. To compound this, the company accelerated attrition targets this summer and opted not to refill many vacant posts in its corporate, logistics, and advertising divisions. Tech Layoffs Employees across sectors have been dealing with layoffs in recent times especially in the technology sector. Most of the tech giants have announced massive layoffs this year, including technology leaders like Meta, Google, and Oracle. Most of these tech firms are dealing with thin margins and challenging economic conditions. Additionally, the layoffs are not limited to a sector; people have been dealing with across the sector throughout the year as companies plan restructuring within the organisations.
