Amazon Layoffs: While Amazon has begun firing its employees whose roles have become redundant or eliminated, the manner in which the layoffs are being carried out has drawn significant attention. Two early morning text messages informing them about the firing were sent to affected employees, according to a report by Business Insider. One message called affected employees to check work or personal mail before coming to the office, while the second one directed them to call a help desk if they hadn’t received “an email message about your role”, the Business Insider reported, as seen those text messages. The purpose of the text messages was to ensure that the laid-off employees wouldn’t arrive office and find their access badges not working. Amazon as part of global restricting in the age of AI and streamline operations and reduce layers announced to lay off over 14,000 employees globally. Managers Are Mostly Affected According to Business Insider’s review on an internal document detailing about 7,500 employees who received layoff notices, over 78% of those affected were managers at levels five to seven — positions ranging from junior to senior management. The report also showed that more than 80% of the impacted staff worked in Amazon’s retail division, including its e-commerce, human resources, and logistics teams. Affected Employees To Get 90 Days Full Pay According to a report chief HR Beth Galetti’s blog post, fired employees would receive full pay and benefits for the next 90 days, including a severance offer. She, however, mentioned that Amazon will continue to hire in key strategic areas while finding additional places, where they can remove layers, increase ownership and realize efficiency gains. Galetti in the blog post emphasized that the ‘world is changing quickly’. “This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before (in existing market segments and altogether new ones),” she added.
