Alpha Kappa Alpha Supports the Community

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated renders services that benefit the social, environmental, cultural, educational, economic and healthy well-being of the community. During the spring and summer months of 2025, Lambda Theta Omega, the local chapter of the sorority, implemented programs to achieve this goal.

The chapter supported community gardens at the Kennedy Center Vital Aging in Greeleyville and at the Greater Lake City Resource Center in Lake City by the donation of seeds, plants, fertilizer and other services. A planting workshop was also held with the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Girl Scouts and the Williamsburg Chapter #341 Mary B. Thomas Girls Circle to inspire environmental care. In addition, the chapter made donations to support the summer reading program sponsored by the Williamsburg County Library. Lambda Theta Omega is an annual supporter of the Waccamaw Mental Health Center in Kingstree and made a financial donation to its Mental Health Awareness activity in May, as well as supported it with attendance. Alpha Kappa Alpha believes that diversity in the financial arena is of great importance to the enrichment of a community. Thus, Lambda Theta Omega promoted “Black Dollar Days” to foster support of economic development in the African American business community. Chapter members were encouraged to support African American businesses during the month of June and to continue support throughout the year. Lambda Theta Omega also supported African American art and entrepreneurship during the celebration of Juneteenth in Kingstree and Lake City. The chapter volunteered at the ArtFields Festival and a soup kitchen sponsored by the Order of The Eastern Stars, both located in Lake City. Additionally, the chapter purchased, delivered and read books for area preschool locations. To end its fiscal year, Lambda Theta Omega recycled cans, bottles and newspapers during the summer months of June, July and August.
