TRAVEL to and from Almeria is getting more upgrades than ever before: the local Almeria airport will have a new air connection with the north of Spain in 2026. This new connection will allow Almeria residents to take flight and do some internal tourism, as well as let in even more holidaymakers to the glittering Costa and reaffirm Almeria’s position as one of the booming hubs of Andalucia for holidays and travel.
The new air route will directly connect the Almeria airport to Santander, the capital city of the Cantabria region on the northern coast of Spain. The new route, which was announced by the Minister of Transport in Cantabria, Roberto Media, is expected to be fully operational by the 2026 peak travel season, which is considered to be between March and October. The Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport will also be adding more routes to Sofia, Bulgaria, and Lanzarote, Spain.
This measure will be a significant boost to Almeria tourism, which is already on the up based on figures from the peak season this year (the Almeria airport experienced a stunning 1.6 per cent growth for the month of August). The decision by part of the Cantabrian government was swayed by recent announcements by Ryanair, a popular low-cost airline, that they will be cutting routes throughout Spain. Notwithstanding, it’s yet unknown which airline will be operating these internal routes, as well as the frequency of the flights and number of seats being offered for the trips.
Peak season has ended … and with it, many flights
The route is much-needed in the province of Almeria, as the region saw some of its most popular flight routes canceled, namely the route to the island of Gran Canaria. Binter Airlines confirmed that its operations in Almeria will end in October of this year. Binter Airlines had previously been operating the flight twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the route accounted for nearly 20,900 seats. The practice is business as usual, as many airlines tend to activate various flight routes only for peak season to cut down on costs and maximise profits from eager holidaymakers.
However, October is not only bringing cuts; it’s also bringing new opportunities for Almeria residents, and particularly British expatriates. Another low-cost airline, EasyJet, recently announced new routes that will connect Almeria directly with the UK, namely Liverpool, at the tail end of October, giving holidaymakers a wonderful chance to tour the UK or come to Almeria for a nature-filled, relaxing autumn. EasyJet will also add a flight connecting Almeria to France.
