Almeria to launch Verifactu system in 2026 to curb invoice fraud

THE Tax Agency in Spain, in an effort to protect businesses and consumers, and stop fraudulent cash transactions, will start tracking all sales paid for in cash. The verification system, called Verifactu, will be implemented in early 2026 and will be a new invoicing method to ensure that all receipts and invoices issued by businesses are truthful, traceable, and unable to be manipulated. A new system to curb cash fraud Within the new system, each sale or service will generate a QR code and a fingerprint that will allow the Tax Agency to verify the sale, if need be. The aim is to protect consumers and prevent fraudulent transactions through a stricter system, in the whole of Spain, including Almeria. Verifactu will be implemented all across the country and it will be mandatory to use. The fines for not doing so will be up to €50,000 per year for the business owner and up to €150,000 for software developers or distributors who try to circumvent the system with digital methods that do not comply with regulations. The new implementation will affect all sectors that issue invoices or receipts in a digital format, including hospitality, retail, and workshops. New system must be implemented in 2026 Companies that pay corporate tax must implement the system starting January 1, 2026, whereas self-employed individuals and other companies will have until July 1, 2026. Verifactu can be implemented earlier if the companies or individuals wish to become familiar with it beforehand. The Tax Agency is helping business owners by publishing guides and information about Verifactu, and some software companies are issuing assistance with the Digital Kit to adapt invoicing software. All in all, the implementation is a tool that will help business owners and consumers work with greater security and transparency, and help bring those who do not comply with regulations to light. With this method, Almeria business owners, as well as their loyal customers, can be better protected. Read more news from Almeria here.
