THE booming agricultural sphere of Almeria continues to grow, and new estimates bode extremely well for the province with regards to its colourful and flavourful fruits. A new forecast put forth by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development estimates that Almeria will harvest nearly 227,000 tonnes of citrus fruit during the 2025-2026 harvesting season, accounting for a massive portion of the production of the whole of Andalucia, which is expected to exceed two million tonnes.
In total,Andalucia is expected to account for 37.4 per cent of Spain’s total expected production, 5.44 million tonnes of fruits. According to the assessment, sweet oranges will account for more than 1.3 million tonnes, or 67 per cent, of the total Andalucian production. Andalucia will produce a whopping 50 per cent of the national total for oranges for this harvesting season. Following it are Andalucian mandarins, with a production of more than 528,000 tonnes; lemons, with nearly 96,800 tonnes; grapefruits, with more than 41,500 tonnes, and other minor citrus fruits, with 8,000 tonnes.
Notwithstanding, Almeria has faced some weather-related challenges when it comes to the harvest this year. A hot, dry summer has left the region susceptible to wildfires and drought, while the end of August and the first weeks of September brought heavy rainfall that threw the fruit plants out of whack for the harvesting season. Still, despite the hardships, the plant stalks are staying strong, and not just that; they’re flourishing. Farmers and agricultural workers will be watching the climate closely in the coming weeks and monitoring the fruit trees and plants in order to best prepare them for the potentially fluctuating weather ahead.
Almeria’s fruits, flourishing despite fickle weather
Almeria has long been recognised for its booming agricultural sphere, which accounts for a large part of the gross income for the province. Between fruits (namely grapes) and vegetables, the region is a powerhouse for agricultural production, not just for Andalucia but for the whole of Spain. During the first six months of 2025, Almeria broke records for its fruit and vegetables sales, achieving a market value of €2.518 billion and representing half of the Andalucian total.
Additionally, the region is well-known for its quality grapes and wine, and despite the rain and wildfires, the grapevines in Almeria stand firm and have set a good foot forward for the beginning of harvest season, leading to the successful production of authentic and delicious Almeria wine.
