All Hype, No Davido: Organizers confirm absence

Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Davido will no longer be performing at the grand finale concert of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations today.

The concert, branded Meganesia, is scheduled for Saturday, 20th September at Sir John Guise Stadium and will now feature an all-PNG artist lineup.

In a statement, the PNG50 Event Organizers confirmed the cancellation, citing circumstances beyond the control of both the organizers and Davido’s management.

“Regrettably, international artist Davido was en route to support and perform alongside our PNG talent, but due to unforeseen circumstances, is unable to attend. We ensured to provide every opportunity for the guest artist to move through to PNG but conditions out of our control or that of the artist’s management could not enable his arrival in time to perform in support of PNG’s finest,” the organizers stated.

Despite the change, the event will go ahead with some of the country’s biggest names in music, including Sprigga Mek, Kronos, Ragga Siai, Tarvin Toune, Saii Kay, Anslom, Kaiit, Airileke, Justin Wellington, Wan Squad and others.

Organizers reassured the public that the show remains a celebration of PNG’s culture and talent.

“None the less, the energy and enthusiasm of the very best of PNG talent will be on show. Meganesia represents the pinnacle of PNG’s musical excellence, and on the culmination of our National Week and the start of our 50th year, the spirit, rhythm, passion and patriotism for Papua New Guinea will be on show,” the statement said.

The event is expected to run from 2:00 pm with performances throughout the afternoon and evening. Tickets remain available at Eliseo and Stop & Shop outlets.
