The event saw dozens of pupils meeting at a designated ‘bus stop’ before walking safely to school together, led by volunteer parents and staff members. Principal, Mrs Teresa Devlin, said the idea was about more than just getting to school. “We want to encourage families to leave the car at home, enjoy some exercise, and connect with each other. Healthier “It’s a simple way to build healthier habits and a stronger sense of community.” The school has been doing the Daily Mile within their school day for quite a few years. This is another way to support the children's health and well being. Parents have praised the initiative for its positive impact. “It’s lovely to see everyone chatting and laughing instead of sitting in traffic,” said Martina, who is mum to Phoebe and Henry. “The kids arrived at school full of energy and in great spirits.” Better still, some coffee and tea was available on arrival to allow for some more chat amongst parents and volunteers. Feature Lynsey Bell, teacher responsible for road safety initiatives at Bridge IPS, said: “We hope the Walking Bus will become a more regular feature, reducing the number of cars around the gates and helping improve air quality in the area. “This type of initiative is only successful due to the support of firstly, our parents and also our staff who agree to come earlier to work in order to help supervise and keep the pupils safe. "And, of course, it is all for the children.” Local councillors have also voiced their support, saying schemes like this contribute to safer, cleaner neighbourhoods.
