On the latest episode of This Morning, ITV viewers saw Alison Hammond issue an update on her family in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa. During the show, which recently saw the hosts share some tragic breaking news , Alison and Dermot O'Leary were speaking about the latest headlines with Kay Burley and Tom Swarbrick. One of which included the tragic Hurricane Melissa, which caused havoc in Jamaica as a catastrophic category 5 storm, the strongest to hit the island. Although the wind speeds weakened when it hit the country, huge devastation was inflicted. The Hurricane is believed to be weakening as it travels, having dropped to a category three when it reached Cuba and is expected to be a category two storm when it reaches the Bahamas. Speaking about the Hurricane on This Morning , Kay commented: "I didn't realise you were from Jamaica. Everything okay with the Hurricane?" Alison replied: "We were talking about it today actually, I haven't been in contact with most of my family at the moment so we're just waiting to hear from there." Kay added: "It's still dark, isn't it?" The This Morning star replied: "Thank you for asking, it's awful. It has moved on now." Supporting Alison, Kay continued: "I hope everything is okay." The Hurricane swept in from the Atlantic with speeds of 185mph and has sadly killed at least seven people. Homes on the Caribbean island have been flattened along with flash flooding. A crisis centre has been set up to help Britons on the Carribean island as Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper detailed in the commons. She said: “Melissa is potentially the most severe storm ever to hit the country. “Many people will be thinking of family and friends in Jamaica and in the region. We are also positioning specialist rapid deployment teams to provide consular assistance to British nationals in the region. Any British nationals who are there should follow our travel advice and the advice of the Jamaican authorities. “There are 50,000 dual nationals who live in Jamaica, up to 8,000 British citizens who may be travelling there or may be on holiday there. We do stand ready to help and respond.” This Morning is available to watch on ITVX .
