On a recent episode of This Morning , Alison Hammond updated ITV viewers on the situation of her family in Jamaica following the devastating Hurricane Melissa. During the programme, which recently delivered some heartbreaking breaking news, Alison and Dermot O'Leary were discussing the latest headlines with Kay Burley and Tom Swarbrick. One of these was the catastrophic Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm that wreaked havoc in Jamaica, marking it as the strongest to ever hit the island. Despite wind speeds decreasing upon reaching the country, significant damage was inflicted. The hurricane is thought to be weakening as it moves, having been downgraded to a category three upon reaching Cuba and is predicted to be a category two storm by the time it hits the Bahamas. Discussing the hurricane on This Morning, Kay asked: "I didn't realise you were from Jamaica. Everything okay with the Hurricane?" To which Alison responded: "We were talking about it today actually, I haven't been in contact with most of my family at the moment so we're just waiting to hear from there." Kay then added: "It's still dark, isn't it?" The This Morning star replied: "Thank you for asking, it's awful. It has moved on now." Showing support for Alison, Kay continued: "I hope everything is okay." The hurricane, which originated from the Atlantic with speeds of 185mph, has tragically claimed the lives of at least seven people. Homes on the Caribbean island have been destroyed, accompanied by flash flooding, reports the Mirror . A crisis centre has been established to assist Britons on the Caribbean island, as outlined by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in the Commons. She stated: "Melissa is potentially the most severe storm ever to hit the country. "Many people will be thinking of family and friends in Jamaica and in the region. We are also positioning specialist rapid deployment teams to provide consular assistance to British nationals in the region. Any British nationals who are there should follow our travel advice and the advice of the Jamaican authorities. "There are 50,000 dual nationals who live in Jamaica, up to 8,000 British citizens who may be travelling there or may be on holiday there. We do stand ready to help and respond." This Morning is available to watch on ITVX.
