Earlier this week, San Jose Sharks alternate captain Alex Wennberg and his wife Felicia partnered with Feeding America and Second Harvest to donate 50,000 meals to families in need encouraging others to contribute as millions face potential cuts to federal food assistance programs. On Wednesday, both Alex and Felicia reposted a thank-you message from Feeding America on their Instagram stories. In the caption, Alex Wennberg reflected on the growing food insecurity crisis in the United States, writing:“42 million Americans are about to lose their SNAP benefits. Among those are 15 million children who will go hungry. Food should not be considered a luxury for children, it’s a basic human right especially if you want the US to be considered the greatest country in the world.”He called the issue nonpartisan and encouraged others to donate to their local food banks.“We donated 50000 meals with @feedingamerica, you can empty out your pantry and donate to your local food bank or add some Mac and cheese and ramen pots for the kids going trick or treating this week. This is not even a left versus right issue, kids should never go hungry.”The couple’s donation comes as food banks across the U.S. brace for increased demand following federal announcements of impending SNAP benefit disruptions which could impact tens of millions of households this winter.Alex Wennberg credited his wife Felicia for the initiativeFelicia and Alex Wennberg have been married since the summer of 2022. The coupel have two children together, Rio Weeren and a daughter named Ivy.During a locker room interview with San Jose Hockey Now, Wennberg credited his wife Felica for inspiring the initiative.“Obviously my wife is doing a lot of work,” Wennberg said. “We’re really fortunate with what we do, but there are people who are less fortunate. Especially right now with kids going without food, every kid should have the opportunity to have a good meal.”Wennberg explained that the timing felt important with the holiday season approaching and referenced the ongoing federal funding cuts that could affect access to food assistance programs.“Right now they’re cutting the staff, it’s going to affect a lot of people,” he said. “Coming into Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, this felt like a great opportunity to give something back.” View this post on Instagram Instagram PostHe added that Felicia had researched several charities before settling on Feeding America and other hunger relief organizations and lauded her for helping him “see more than just hockey.”
