Alejandro Garnacho verdict reached after Man Utd training behaviour and Chelsea act slammed

Alejandro Garnacho is looking to kickstart his career at Chelsea following his move from Manchester United. The 21-year-old’s Old Trafford exit was on the cards ever since the winger expressed frustration at starting May’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur on the bench. Head coach Ruben Amorim took unkindly to that and Garnacho spent pre-season training away from United’s first-team, having expressed a desire to leave. Chelsea completed the long-expected signing of the Argentina international for £40million, with the Red Devils inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Garnacho also had a tense relationship with Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, once liking a negative social media post about the Dutchman. While few doubt his ability, there are question marks over his attitude, which Enzo Maresca will hope to iron out. Here’s a round-up of what managers, team-mates and pundits have said about the enigmatic Argentine… So exasperated had Amorim become with Garnacho that he reportedly told him he was heading out of the club in front of his team-mates. Ahead of the final league game of the season – before Garnacho’s outburst about being left on the bench for the Europa League final – his boss told him during a training session: “You better hope you have a good agent this summer,” reported The Athletic. By that point, the dye had already been cast on his United career, with Garnacho angling for a move away from the club. The relationship between head coach and player then soured further when Garnacho spoke to the media after the devastating loss to Spurs in Bilbao, saying: “Our season was s***. We didn’t beat anyone in the league. “We lacked a lot of things. When you don’t score goals, you always need more. Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today… I don’t know. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.” United captain Bruno Fernandes once delivered a less-than-complimentary verdict about Garnacho’s attitude after he scored the winning goal in a Europa League game against Real Sociedad in 2022. Fernandes told BT Sport: “He was good but he knows we expect a lot from him. He’s still really young, doing really well. At the beginning of the season, he was not at his best. “On the [pre-season] tour he did not have the best attitude. That’s why he didn’t get his chance until now. He’s getting his chances because he’s training better, he’s having the correct attitude.” Given what has unfolded since, that performance proved to be a false dawn. Fernandes tried his best to nurture the obvious natural talent Garnacho possesses, but ultimately his pleas for professionalism fell on deaf ears. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher brought up Garnacho as he slammed an aspect of the modern game he “can’t stand.” It had nothing to do with his transfer or performances on the pitch, but instead the use of his mobile phone. After sealing his move to Stamford Bridge, Garnacho watched the home clash with Fulham from the stands, where he was spotted scrolling on his phone just eight minutes into the game. Carragher complained: “You know what I didn’t like? Did you see the game [against Fulham], when they go to the people in the stands and they are on their phones with the game going on? “I can’t stand it. And it’s not just him by the way, but I can’t stand it. So it’s a miss for that. For sitting on his phone during an important game for Chelsea.” Former United defender Paul Parker pulled no punches when it came to Garnacho following his Chelsea transfer, calling his conduct “disrespectful.” The former England full-back told MyBettingSites: “His conduct on and off the pitch was disrespectful. “All he wanted to do was score a goal or have a near miss so he could act like Ronaldo. Now he’s gone to a club where there’s a lot more ego. He will alienate himself or it’ll be a battle there. “United fans backed him when he was going through things both on and off the field. His brother was tweeting things and they backed him and he said nothing. He’s stuck two fingers up at the club that nursed him.” Garnacho will be looking to prove his critics wrong and defy the public perception of his behind-the-scenes behaviour as he embarks on a fresh start at Stamford Bridge.
