Albania's First AI Minister 'Pregnant', Set To Give Birth To 83 Digital 'Children', Says PM Rama

Months after unveiling Albania's first AI-generated government minister, Prime Minister Edi Rama made a bizarre announcement that she is "pregnant." AI Minister Diella is set to "give birth" to 83 AI "children", one for each Socialist Party member of parliament, who will serve as digital aides in the halls of power, Rama said. While addressing the Global Dialogue (BGD) in Germany's Berlin, Rama said, "We took quite a risk today with Diella here and we did very well. So for the first time, Diella is pregnant and with 83 children." Rama explained that the “children," or assistants, will document all parliamentary proceedings and update legislators on any discussions or events they were unable to attend. "Each one…will serve as an assistant for those who will participate in parliamentary sessions, and will keep a record of everything that happens, and will suggest members of parliament. These children will know their mother," he said. "For example, if you go for coffee and forget to come back to work, this child will say what was said when you were not in the hall, and will say who you should counter-attack. If you invite me next time, you will have 83 more screens for the children of Diella," he added. Rama anticipated that the system would be completely functional by the close of 2026. Who is Diella? Alabani's first AI Minister Diella, which means "sun" in Albanian, has been guiding users on the state's e-Albania portal since January, according to the Guardian. The digital assistant gives voice commands with the full range of bureaucratic tasks they need to perform in order to access about 95% of citizen services digitally, the report said. "Diella, the first cabinet member who is not physically present, but has been virtually created by AI," Prime Minister Edi Rama said, adding it would help make Albania "a country where public tenders are 100% free of corruption". Rama made the announcement at the ruling Socialist party conference in Tirana. He described Diella, who on the e-Albania portal is dressed in traditional Albanian costume, as "the servant of public procurement". The move was welcomed by the Albanian media as "a major transformation in the way the Albanian government conceives and exercises administrative power, introducing technology not only as a tool, but also as an active participant in governance".
