Alana Lee Mawson

Born May 3, 1953

She died Sept. 10, 2025.

On behalf of the Mawson family, we share the sad news of the passing of our sister, aunt, dog mom, and friend, Alana Lee Mawson, who died peacefully in her sleep at her home in The Villages, Florida.

Alana was preceded in death by her sister, Olga Diane Mawson-Walker (April 8, 2025), and her parents, Leon A. Mawson (1999) and Valerie Creque-Mawson (2002).

She is survived by her sister, Marlene M. Carney-Malacarne of St. John; her nieces, Valerie C. Sims and Leslie A. Carney; her nephews, Mark J. Walker and Steven C. Walker; a grandniece, several grandnephews; and many relatives and friends who will miss her deeply.

Born on May 3, 1953, in Washington, D.C., Alana was raised on the island of St. Thomas. She began her schooling at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School before continuing her education in Puerto Rico. A bright and curious student, she excelled in her studies and developed a lifelong love of reading. As a child, the outdoors became her playground. Pretending to be Sheena, Queen of the Jungle—a heroine she adored from the comic books—she spent hours exploring the wooded hillsides of her neighborhood, always with her faithful dog, Laddie, by her side.

Alana carried that adventurous spirit into adulthood. She loved sailing and put her captain’s license to use by taking guests on overnight trips to secluded coves. She was also a talented cook, known especially for her much-loved broccoli casserole, which became a family favorite. Her island cravings included a good Callaloo, conch, fungi, fried plantains, and stewed pork with rice and beans.

Alana’s professional life was as varied as her interests. She worked in real estate with Sunhaven Realty, at Caribbean Inflatables, and later ran her own business, Have Truck Will Travel, helping deliver goods to residents of St. John. She also had a keen eye for design, constantly upgrading and improving her homes. A natural organizer, she lived by her favorite mantra: “Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance.”

Animals always held a special place in her heart. Over the years, countless stray dogs found a home with her, and she welcomed each one without hesitation. At times, she cared for as many as five dogs at once, each with their own personality. The loss of every companion weighed heavily on her, but she took comfort in imagining them reunited in “doggie heaven” with endless treats. Among them, Sheba held an especially cherished place in her heart. Sassy, Shadow, Scamp, Rascal, Bear, and Missy are just a few more that come to mind…… Hershey, an island mix and her last faithful companion for 16 years, passed on May 23, 2025.

In 2016, Alana moved to Florida for access to better healthcare services. After her health declined in late 2024 and living with constant pain, she faced her final months with quiet courage. Her family and friends will remember Lanny’s free spirit, her deep love of animals, and her passion for protecting the environment.

Her remains were cremated, and her ashes will be scattered at sea per her wishes. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be announced later. If you wish to send a card of condolence, please mail to her sister, Marlene at PO Box 599, Cruz Bay, St. John, USVI 00831
