The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has attributed the recent failure of the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) electronic hospital management system to Lightwave Health Information Management System Limited. During his address to Parliament on Tuesday, October 28, Mr. Akandoh disclosed that the company had not successfully executed a $100 million contract intended to link health facilities nationwide to the digital platform. “The contract amount was $100 million to connect 950 health facilities throughout the country to the system. The contract was initially set to conclude in 2022. However, in that year, it was extended twice until December 31, 2024. By the end of 2024, only 450 out of the 950 facilities had been connected. Of the $100 million, $77 million has already been disbursed,” Mr. Akandoh informed Parliament. His remarks came in response to the NHIA’s announcement on October 26 regarding a temporary disruption impacting several electronic hospital management systems across the nation. This breakdown has resulted in significant delays in record-keeping and patient processing, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where hospitals have reverted to manual systems. Numerous patients have expressed their dissatisfaction with the extended waiting times and reduced service efficiency.
