The Air India group on Tuesday announced that it will commence commercial flights from Navi Mumbai International Airport, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd., starting from the airport’s first phase of operations.The airport is set to open for commercial operations on September 30.In the initial phase, Air India Express, the group’s value carrier, will operate 20 daily departures or 40 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) from NMIA, connecting 15 Indian cities. The airline plans to scale up to 55 daily departures (110 ATMs) by mid-2026, including up to 5 daily international flights. By Winter 2026, the group aims to operate 60 daily departures (120 ATMs), linking key domestic and international destinations.Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said that the group is looking forward to commencing operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport, as Mumbai joins the league of world cities with more than one airport. “We are happy to work with Adani Airports to build NMIA not only as a point that connects to the rest of India, but also as one of the country’s key global transit hubs for both – passengers and cargo – given its strategic geographical location. NMIA’s adoption of technology for enhancing efficiency and best in class experience for passengers will play a pivotal role in delivering seamless and superior passenger journeys for decades to come.”Air India Express’ operations at NMIA are expected to boost connectivity to and from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and facilitate seamless international transits.NMIA is being developed in five phases, with the launch phase expected to handle 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and 0.5 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo. Upon full completion, the airport will have the capacity to serve 90 MPPA and handle 3.2 MMT of cargo annually.Earlier, Maharashtra CM Fadnavis had said that the NMIA will be will be many times bigger than the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.The Navi Mumbai Airport is a 74:26 joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO).In February 2018, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the new airport, which is coming up at an investment of Rs 16,700 crore with an aim to reduce the congestion at the capacity-constrained Mumbai airport, along with meeting the soaring demand for air travel in the country.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
