Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Visakhapatnam, completed 100 Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HOLEP) surgeries, a press release issued here on Saturday (September 27, 2025) said. The HOLEP programme was led by urologists Dr G. Ravindra Varma, Dr Amit Saple, and Dr Sridhar P. and supported by infrastructure, staff, and laser technology.
Dr G. Ravindra Varma said, “With increasing life expectancy, we are seeing a growing number of men affected by prostate enlargement along with co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac conditions. HOLEP is an answer to this modern challenge as it provides a permanent and safe solution with minimal complications even for patient with co-morbidities.”
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or enlargement of the prostate, is one of the most common conditions affecting men over 50. Traditionally managed with open or conventional surgery, treatment has rapidly evolved with the arrival of laser technology, he added.
Dr Amit Saple highlighted the shift in surgical trends. “Many men delay seeking treatment despite experiencing problems such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, or incomplete bladder emptying,” he said, adding, “These delays can affect quality of life and lead to complications. HOLEP allows us to treat prostates of any size, something conventional surgery could not always achieve. Globally, HOLEP is becoming the first choice, replacing older methods”.
