Aiden by Best Western adopts capped US$200 nightly rate for Guyanese

Aiden by Best Western has confirmed a special capped rate of US$200 + VAT per night for Guyanese, both at home and in the diaspora, starting October 1. New Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues recently said that in the wake of complaints about high accommodation costs, the government was contemplating a US$200 per night price cap for Guyanese and members of the diaspora. “It is the first hotel following my engagement session earlier this week… This is a win for accessibility and a win for tourism in Guyana,” Rodrigues said via social media yesterday. The minister has committed to a calendar of events starting in 2026, with major activities scheduled each quarter and packaged into seven or 10-day experiences to attract both local and international visitors. Festivals such as Diwali, Christmas, and Independence celebrations will be marketed abroad, with support from airlines and embassies to reach the diaspora. To this end, she acknowledged widespread concerns about the high cost of accommodation and announced the US$200 per night price cap, particularly when they book through official tourism packages. “This is about ensuring access and affordability for Guyanese first,” she said, while noting that participation in the scheme will be voluntary but linked to promotional opportunities. Addressing the gathering at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, the minister said that growing tourism as a strong economic driver requires a shift from operating in silos to building stronger partnerships across the industry. Mitra Ramkumar, Presi-dent of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), told Stabroek News yesterday that this idea has long been under consideration within the industry with the primary goal being to ensure higher occupancy rates in hotels. With increased government-led promotions aimed at attracting more visitors, the industry anticipates a steadier flow of guests, which can lead to reduced costs through higher volumes. He emphasised the importance of maintaining steady occupancy throughout both peak and off-peak seasons, noting that during slower periods, operators typically offer special rates to boost bookings. Ramkumar said the proposed price cap aligns with practices already in place across other CARICOM countries and is seen as a supportive measure that could help fill rooms, particularly during low-demand times. This initiative, he noted, along with other potential measures, could be implemented well before the end of the year, especially in the lead-up to Tourism Awareness Month.
