Ghana’s Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has told the country’s legal professionals to avoid bringing foreign groups into Ghana’s judicial and constitutional matters.
He was speaking at a conference for the Ghana Bar Association. Dr. Ayine said that while it is good for Ghanaian lawyers to work with international groups to share ideas and improve standards, that cooperation should not extend into the country’s internal politics.
“We must resist the temptation of inviting foreign interference in our internal constitutional processes,” he said. He explained that allowing such interference goes against the principle that power belongs to the people of Ghana.
His comments were a response to a recent statement from two foreign legal groups: the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association.
These groups had asked Ghana’s President to reverse the suspension of the country’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo. They praised Ghana’s history of respecting the law and wanted the Chief Justice reinstated. This request has caused a lot of discussion among lawyers in Ghana.
