Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, has been confirmed as the new substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. This confirmation follows the resignation of the former chairman, Tunde Azeez, due to ongoing health issues. Azeez formally stepped down on Wednesday. He had been on medical leave for nearly a month since his administration was inaugurated on July 27, 2025. The Leader of the Agege Council House, Adeshina Haruna, read Azeez’s resignation letter during a plenary session at the Council Chamber. Lawmakers subsequently voted unanimously to confirm Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who had been acting in the role, as the substantive chairman. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa had previously sought the chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but was initially withdrawn after facing opposition. Since Azeez took leave, Obasa’s son had been effectively managing grassroots mobilization and engagement. Council legislators stated that their decision was motivated by the need to avoid a leadership vacuum and ensure the continuity of administrative work. They also commended Azeez for his contributions and wished him a swift recovery. In his acceptance speech, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa pledged to consolidate existing initiatives and deepen engagement with community stakeholders to improve service delivery in Agege. The plenary also included a review of the council’s committee structure and oversight, with members emphasizing the need for greater transparency, accountability, and monitoring of developmental projects.
