Here’s what Agassiz-Harrison was talking about Back in the Day… 5 years ago Agassiz-Harrison Observer, November 5, 2020 Thousands of votes waiting to be counted in Chilliwack ridings Elections B.C. has released a graph that shows there are still thousands of votes to be counted in both Chilliwack and Chilliwack-Kent. Their progress report for certification envelopes was released on Oct. 30 and lists how many mail-in and absentee ballots have been received to date. In Chilliwack-Kent, the margin in razor tin, with the NDP’s Kelli Paddon holding a lead of 5,199 (33.31 per cent) to Laurie Throness’s 5,004 932.06 per cent). That’s less than 200 votes and made the riding too hard to call on Election Day. 10 years ago Agassiz-Harrison Observer, November 12, 2015 AFD:Fighting fires for 70 years Fighting fires has always been a nasty business, but Fern and Earl Dyer remember a time when it was even more challenging. Back in the fall of ‘95, when Fern was on his first fire, the water supply was pulled by a team of horses, there were no uniforms or headgear, and rescuers like himself would be tethered to a rope as they plunged into a blaze looking for missing residents. The Agassiz fire department had just been formed that year, and Fern was there from nearly the beginning. When his brother Earl was discharged from the military in Manitoba, the next year he moved to join his family and naturally fell in beside sibling Fern at the department. “We were 16 and 22 and you went to help,” says Fern in his apartment across the hall from brother Earl’s. “It wasn’t a matter of belonging to the fire department, you just went to help and you stayed with it, that’s all.” 70 years ago Agassiz-Harrison Advance, November 3, 1955 Last year’s graduates now following varied careers Many of the people in the district probably don’t know what has happened to all the graduates of 1955. This brief resume will possibly help in such instances. Among those who are furthering their education by attending Grade XIII classes at Mission High School are Rick Bradburn, John Johnson, Richard Ottenbreit, Pat Clarke, Don McLeod, Fritz Harmsenn and Milan Mayer. Glenn McDonald is attending classes at Grand Forks, B.C. The University of B.C. has the attendance of freshmen Donald Johnson and Arnold McCombs. Any time your car needs tuning up, you’ll know where to go. Bill Bates is at Pioneer Motors and Mike Fedorkrew is at Parkview Motors. They aren’t at opposite ends of the block because they don’t get along, but because of their jobs. Agassiz’s baseball star, Arnold Bennewith, is with the government survey crew. 102 years ago Agassiz Record, November 7, 1923 Hallowe’en Party On Friday, a very enjoyable evening was spent in the Agricultural Hall, when the two school rooms of Mr. Morrow and Mr. Brown held their Hallowe’en party. A very large number of parents, older brothers and sisters attended this party. The evening was spent in games, and later, dancing. Music was furnished by Misses Robinson and Rankin, and Mrs. Probert ad Mrs. R.D. Clark while Master Albert Clark played the violin in a very creditable manner. A well appreciated lunch was served at about 11 p.m. and the children as well ss the older folks all seemed to enjoy “the feed.” Much credit is due the teachers and those assisting them in making the party the success it was. If the people and their children could only assemble more often and enjoy some of the small joys of life such as they did that evening. It would sure strengthen the community life.
