NORMAN — Oklahoma attorney general and 2026 gubernatorial candidate Genter Drummond issued an official commendation Thursday that pertains to OU football.
Drummond praised Dr. Steven Shin, the surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles who operated on Sooner quarterback John Mateer’s injured hand Wednesday.
Mateer reportedly broke a bone in his hand during the first quarter of the Sooners’ win over Auburn last Saturday. He returned from surgery in Los Angeles to Oklahoma on Thursday but a timetable for his return to play has not been established.
In the meantime, Shin has gained a cult following from OU fans on social media who are hoping his surgical expertise will get Mateer back on the field sooner than later. Drummond’s commendation of Shin states:
“Whereas Dr. Steven Shin of Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is widely considered one of the foremost hand surgeons in the United States; and whereas this remarkable surgeon has operated on many star athletes, including Drew Brees, Stephen Curry, Jordan Love, Mike Trout and OKC Thunder forward Jalen Williams;
“And whereas Dr. Shin successfully completed surgery September 24 on University of Oklahoma QB John Mateer, who promptly declared his surgeon to be “The GOAT” and; whereas Dr. Shin has earned the gratitude of Sooner fans far and wide, who have taken to celebrating his surgical acumen on social media; therefore I, Gentner Drummond, Attorney General of the State of Oklahoma, do hereby recognize and commend Dr. Steven Shin for his dedication, professionalism and admirable commitment to helping ensure great football.”
