After Pulisic’s Injury, Donovan Says It’s Time for a Change

Christian Pulisic was injured in the USMNT's 2-1 victory against Australia, during the first half-hour of the game. According to CBS Sports , the AC Milan player is set to miss at least two weeks due to a hamstring injury. Logically, Mauricio Pochettino was heavily criticized for starting his star player in a friendly match. Meanwhile, USMNT legend Landon Donovan recently spoke about Pulisic, 27, and noted that it's time for a change. Donovan Claims Christian Pulisic Must Change His Approach After Recent Injury Donovan said he has realized that opposing defenders constantly go after the native of Hershey. Therefore, he gave him advice based on his own experience. "I learned this over time, and I hope Christian gets there too," Donovan said on the "Unfiltered Soccer" podcast. The former LA Galaxy star recommended that Pulisic get up quickly when he is knocked down, to send a strong message to his opponents. "One is the faster you get up, the better message it sends to the guy who smashed you. You get up and go, ‘Yeah. Good one, mate. Like good try. You tried and I’m good.’ Sometimes you can’t, you’re injured. But the faster you can get up, the better." "Two, when you start giving it back, it stops fast," said Donovan, before telling a personal anecdote that could serve as an example for Pulisic. "We used to play Salt Lake all the time and there was a center-back named Nat Borchers. Whenever we had the ball, I’d start making a run and he would literally just check me through the chest, just smash me. (…) I told the ref that he’s doing this every time. He said, ‘I can’t see it Landon, what do you want me to do?'" "So I’ll never forget this. Salt Lake takes a ball down the left side. He takes a touch wide and he’s going to hit a long ball. I just ran and bang, straight through him. He fell and his look in the eye was like a wounded deer. I was like, ‘Don’t ever do that again.’ That was it, he was done," he concluded.
