After gunshot fired on city street, police use videos to help track down 3 Central NY men
Utica, N.Y. — Police investigating gunfire on a Utica street used videos to help track down and arrest three men Wednesday night, police said.
The videos and investigation led officers to a home where they found guns and cocaine, said Lt. Michael Curley, a Utica Police Department spokesperson.
At about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the sound of gunfire in the 600 block of Lansing Street was picked up by ShotSpotter, police said.
ShotSpotter is a tracking technology that allows police to approximate the location of gunshots in a city.
Officers found a spent 9mm shell casing on Lansing Street during the investigation.
Police also found video footage of a dark sedan driving into the intersection of Lansing and Morris streets, police said. The video showed an individual firing off at least one round, they said.
It’s believed the gunfire didn’t hit anyone or any building, police said. No one has come forward as a victim.
Investigators tracked the vehicle to a house at the intersection of James Street and Howard Avenue, about 1.5 miles away from the initial shooting location, police said.
Later video footage captured two of the men getting out of the vehicle and going into a home, police said.
A team comprising of Utica Police, New Hartford Police, and Oneida County Sheriff’s executed a warrant for the men and building around 8:30 p.m., Curley said.
The three Utica residents at the house were arrested: Javian Torrence, 22, Kanye Holmes, 21, and Jamre Davis, 26. They all face multiple charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Torrence and Holmes were also charged with criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
It is unclear if any of the men fired the shot that launched the investigation, Curley said. Comparisons have been submitted to see if the bullet police found came from one of the two guns found in the search.
The police say that if they can identify the shooter, they plan to file charges in relation to the original shots fired investigation in the near future.
The men are currently being held in Oneida County Jail, Curley said.
