Afreximbank bids farewell to outgoing president, welcomes new

The African Export-Import Bank (Afrieximbank), which has offered Guyana a US$500 million purse to develop small and medium enterprises among a range of financial and other support, now has a new President and Chairman in Dr George Elombi as it bid farewell to now retired Professor Benedict Oramah. A release from the bank said that at an Afreximbank legacy conference in Cairo, Egypt on October 25, Dr Oramah was celebrated and honoured for the stellar service he gave the bank since 1994, serving as president since 2015. In the latter position, he built the bank’s balance sheet and guarantees almost eight-fold, from US$6 billion when he took office to almost US$44 billion as at September 2025. The trained economist, who visited Guyana three times during his presidency and praised President Irfaan Ali’s leadership and vision, has said that he saw Guyana playing a major role in the development of trade in the region and with Africa.
