Aemet issues yellow alert for rain and storms in Murcia

Storms Set to Break Murcia’s Late Summer Spell After a week of almost summer-like heat, the weather across the Region of Murcia is about to take a sharp turn. The Spanish weather agency Aemet has issued a yellow alert for rain and storms, warning that some areas could see up to 15 litres of rain per square metre in just one hour on Sunday, October 26. Wet weather on the way The alert covers the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca, and Águilas, where the heaviest downpours are expected. According to Aemet, the warning will be in place from 6:00pm on Sunday until 6:00am on Monday, October 27. The risk of rain is particularly high along the coast around Águilas, though showers are likely across almost the entire region. Elsewhere, rain is forecast for most municipalities from Sunday afternoon onwards. The chance of rain is close to 100 per cent in many areas, only slightly lower in Cartagena and around the Mar Menor, where it still stands at roughly 75 per cent. In other words, umbrellas will definitely come in handy. 25/10 18:30 AVISOS MAÑANA | Región de Murcia: tormentas y lluvias. Nivel máximo de aviso: amarillo. In Yecla and Jumilla, rain could start earlier in the day as the front moves in from the northwest. These showers may arrive in short, heavy bursts that could temporarily flood low-lying streets or rural roads. Thunder and lightning are also possible, especially in inland areas. A noticeable drop in temperature The change in weather is being driven by a cold air mass moving down from the north, which will bring temperatures back to normal for this time of year. Daytime highs will drop to around 25°C, still mild, but a big difference after the week’s warm spell. It won’t feel cold, but gone are the balmy “veroño” days, that’s the Spanish nickname for the late “summer-autumn” weather we’ve been enjoying. What to expect Drivers are advised to take extra care, especially during sudden downpours when roads can become slippery. If you’re planning to travel on Sunday evening, leave extra time for the journey. Outdoor events may also be affected, so it’s worth checking for updates before heading out. Along the coast, gusty winds and choppy seas are expected. Small boats should stay close to port until the alert passes. Why the weather is changing This sudden shift is due to a cold front meeting the warm, humid air that’s been sitting over the region. When the two collide, the warm air rises quickly, creating instability and producing the kind of scattered storms forecast for Sunday. Outlook for the coming days According to Aemet, rain and storms will ease on Monday, October 27, though a few showers may linger. Temperatures will remain slightly cooler through the start of next week, marking a return to more typical late-October weather across Murcia.
