Advocacy group calls for a safety summit on bullying at schools

Advocacy group, Parents for an Equal Education, has called on government to host a National Safety Summit to address the bullying crisis at schools. The call follows the assault of a 16-year-old Milnerton High School learner in the Western Cape. The assault, which was captured on video and widely circulated online, has once again exposed the country’s deepening bullying crisis at schools and the need for better protection of learners. Founder of the group, Vanessa Le Roux says, “I want all stakeholders involved. It must be students, parents, SGB, all departments that work with children so that we can come up with a more comprehensive plan to stop this thing because it’s clearly out of control. This is not an isolated case. It happened at four model C schools, but also in our township schools. So there must be a summit and there must be consequences for this type of behaviour.” Related Video | Bullying in SA schools turning into a crisis
