Cabbage has been a staple vegetable in UK homes for many years. Its versatility makes it a kitchen favourite. It can add a crunch to your coleslaw, it’s a great side dish for your Sunday roast or it can increase the nutritional value of your minestrone soup . You can saute , boil, or even fry cabbage , but according to experts, adding a secret ingredient that you probably already have at home will make it taste 10 times better. Nutrition Health Coach Laura Fuentes said the simple twist can elevate your cabbage dishes. The food and nutrition expert said: “This easy recipe for sauteed cabbage shows you how to turn this simple veggie into a delicious caramelised simple side dish.” Sautéing cabbage “adds a special flavour and texture” that you can’t achieve with steaming or boiling. However, to “make great cabbage”, you need to be cooking with a secret ingredient: vinegar. Laura explained: “A dash of vinegar enhances the cabbage’s flavour in a way that reduces the need for added fats, like butter. You don’t need much either, just half a tablespoon.” The Express reports that Laura advises using white wine and rice vinegar when cooking cabbage, but you could also use apple cider vinegar. As cabbage craves acid, just half a tablespoon will “completely transform” this sautéed cabbage and “bring it to life.” In a large pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and brown it for one minute. Next, add the cabbage and cook for three minutes. Season with salt and black pepper and mix well. Leave the cabbage to cook for an additional five minutes, or until tender and cooked down. You’ll know the cabbage is just right when you see tender bits of browned cabbage scattered throughout the pan. For the last step, pour in the vinegar, and saute for one minute before serving with your meal. Readers took to the comments section of the food blog to share their opinions on this cabbage recipe.
