In its first ropeway project, Adani Group will be building the ₹4081-crore project connecting Sonprayag and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. On Monday, Adani Enterprises Ltd. (AEL) said it has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd. (NHLML) for the 12.9 kilometer-long project, that will take six years to complete, and will reduce travel time to just 36 minutes from the current 9-hour-long arduous.
The project will be executed by AEL’s Roads, Metro, Rail and Water (RMRW) division, the company stated in an official release. The ropeway will be able to carry 1,800 passengers per hour per direction. The ropeway is part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana. Developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis, the project will take six years to complete and AEL will operate it for 29 years after construction.
The journey to the Kedarnath temple is a challenging 16-km uphill trek from Gaurikund and is currently covered on foot, by ponies, palanquins or by using the helicopter service. The proposed ropeway is planned to provide convenience to pilgrims visiting the temple and ensure all-weather connectivity between Sonprayag and Kedarnath.
Along with improving connectivity, the ropeway project is expected to create jobs and boost tourism in the region. “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project – it is a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure. By making this sacred journey safer, faster and more accessible, we honour the faith of millions while creating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s people through our partnership with NHLML and the government of Uttarakhand. This prestigious project reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that not only serves the nation but also uplifts its people,” stated Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group.
Kedarnath is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas situated at an elevation of 3,583 meters (11,968 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of the State of Uttarakhand. The temple is open for pilgrims for about 6-7 months in a year from Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) to Diwali (October-November) and is visited by about 20 lakh pilgrims annually during the season.
