For their first-ever joint... One of the country’s most talked about couples, Adam Hyde and Abbie Chatfield, sit down for their first interview together. Stellar: This is the first interview and photo shoot you have done as a couple since you began dating last year. What’s it like working together? Adam: I love it, because today I think it kind of hit both of us. This is our first proper shoot. We’ve done music videos, we spend every single second together. We haven’t spent a moment apart. Which to some might sound strange, but that’s how we’re rocking. It’s funny because for photo shoots, you have to be quite sexy and serious, and she’s always sexy. I’m not good at being serious nor sexy. We had to look at each other and we couldn’t not laugh. Abbie: It was great. It’s fun to do it together because we have these careers that have a lot of similar touch points and similar experiences, but we haven’t ever really moulded them together. In their first-ever joint interview, Abbie is joined by her partner, musician Adam Hyde - one half of Peking Duk and the creative mind behind Keli Holiday. Picture: Steven Chee for Stellar Stellar: Adam, how do you feel about being referred to in some circles, in a disparaging way, as “Mr Abbie Chatfield”? Adam: That’s hilarious. And I love that. I’m not like, “NO, I am my own man!” That would actually insinuate that you’re not your own man, you are actually a slave to your own insecurities … I’ll wear that label like a badge of honour until the day I die. Stellar: You’ve been dating for just under two years. How do you look back at that early stage of your relationship now? Abbie: Remember the first time you stayed over? I got up and ran to the cafe to get orange juice and coffees, because I was like, “I can’t comprehend that the guy from Peking Duk is in my bed, the guy I’ve had a crush on.” Adam: The same guy you sang Crowded House to for eight hours. That’s the interesting thing about Abbie. She has beautiful moments of nervousness and trepidation, yet she’s more than willing to stand on top of her bed and belt out Crowded House at the top of her lungs. I was still a stranger at that point. So the polarity is quite shocking. ‘I love everything about him.’ Adam Hyde and Abbie Chatfield. Picture: Steven Chee for Stellar Stellar: Abbie, what have you learnt about yourself, and about life, from Adam? Abbie: What I’ve learnt from being around you is that you’re so talented, but you also have a valve that you have constantly flowing. He isn’t afraid to look like a d***head, which is really nice to be around. I love everything about him. He makes me feel so safe and loved, and we have so much fun. It feels like how a relationship should feel – which I don’t think I’ve ever felt before. Things are very easy. We genuinely like being around each other. Adam: I f***ing love it. It’s my favourite thing in the world. Abbie: Everything about him really inspires me. I was obsessed with him for three years before we got together. Maybe I’m living the fan fiction. Back when you were simply another fan of Peking Duk, I imagine you never thought you would one day be the inspiration for Keli Holiday, his solo music alter ego. Abbie: Yeah, I couldn’t imagine that. This song he wrote, when he first played it for me, it was so emotional. I was also there a lot of the time that he wrote it. Even the bridge you were singing when we were going home from the beach … It’s wild to think about. We met on my radio show. I was in a relationship, you were in a relationship. That was four years ago. I had to mute him on Instagram because I had a crush on him so big that I couldn’t bear to see his posts. For two years he was muted. Fully muted. Then he was like, “I want to be your boyfriend”. So I unmuted him. We were on the phone for three hours every night when I was filming FBoy Island. Adam: We were FaceTiming for four hours a day. Abbie: But I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was convinced he didn’t like me. I went to the ARIAs after party for this record label. And I just stood in the corner talking to Dylan Alcott, then I saw you appear from behind Dylan, but I love Dylan so I didn’t want to say “F*** off Dylan,” but then you walked behind him and I was like, this is my chance to talk to him. Then I couldn’t find you. So I went home and cried for three hours. It’s funny now, though. Picture: Steve Chee for Stellar Picture: Steven Chee for Stellar Abbie, you appear in the music video for ‘More’, another song on Keli Holiday’s upcoming album. Is this the start of an acting career? Abbie: Oh my God, no, absolutely not. I can’t act. It’s very fun and silly. Adam: There’s also a lot of saucy stuff in that song. It’s a very horny song. ‘Dancing2’ is real longing, real love, real romance and emotion, while ‘More’ is like sweat and bedsheets. There’s a very not-safe-for-work moment in ‘More’. What can you tell us about it? Abbie: Mum can’t listen to this song, I swear! Adam: I’ll say it in PG terms. On this song there’s a moment with this bridge of this build up, break down thing, and I think it kind of feels like an orgasm. It’s kind of like swelling. There was a time where we were having sex and I said, “OK, I’m gonna record it.” And she’s like, “Cool, let’s do it.” It’s funny because the bedsheets were covering the microphone completely so none of it was audible. Then there was a different recording [a voice note] that I was like, “OK, I’m just going to put this in.” Abbie: All with my consent, by the way. Adam: I was like, this is perfect. It’s romance. I think it is romance personally. Abbie: It’s like hearing your own voice, but a million times worse. Adam: Yeah, it’s pretty gnarly. Abbie: I think it’s very cool, so I gave full consent. But me hearing it, if I think about it, I feel sick. Adam Hyde (aka Keli Holiday) and Abbie Chatfield at the launch of The Golden Bachelor last month. Picture: WireImage Abbie you were introduced to the Australian public as runner-up on The Bachelor in 2019, and recently your mum, Laura Junner, was a contestant on The Golden Bachelor. How do you feel about your mum making her public debut? Abbie: I’m very excited. Everyone loves Mum. She’s a Year 1 teacher. She didn’t even apply for the show. It was because the producers of FBoy Island produce The Golden Bachelor. I got a text from the EP saying, did she want to go on the show? I asked Mum and she was like, “Oh, no, darling.” Then she was like, “You know what? I’ll do it for me.” She had a great time. She made really strong friendships with women. Mum goes, “Oh darling, I’m a bit lonely this week. I’ve only got three lunches.” I go, “Once every two months, I get to see my friends.” Outside of Sex And The City, I didn’t think people got to catch up with their friends that often. My mum is taking 30 friends to see Peking Duk. Adam: We did a Peking Duk show on the Gold Coast recently and Abbie’s mum, me and her were talking, and she goes, “Is it all right, darling, if I bring a few friends?” I’m like, “Yeah, for sure. However many you want.” Abbie: She calls and goes, “Is he sure?” I go, “Yeah,” thinking it would be three or four people. Adam: She added 20 names. And they were all from The Golden Bachelor. Abbie: My Year 1 teacher was there, my prep teacher, her best friend was there. It was a mix. Adam: It spoke volumes about the enigmatic character she is, because if I was a TV producer in a hypothetical world and I met her, I’d go, we’ve got to get her on every show we can. She opens her mouth and you’re like, “You are incredible”. Abbie: Yeah, she’s the best. Abbie Chatfield, right, and her mum Laura. Picture: WireImage Picture: MATRIX Now you’ve been together for a while and your lives are so intertwined, what’s the dynamic between your families? Abbie: Our mums have met once, because Mum is in Brisbane, Adam’s mum is in Canberra – but we all had lunch, actually without Adam. His sister came, my sister, my mum. They loved each other. I think they text. Adam’s mum goes, “I gotta call Laura”. Copied URL to clipboard dailytelegraph.com.au Abbie Chatfield and Adam Hyde open up in this Stellar Exclusive Abbie Chatfield is no stranger to the Stellar podcast studio — but this time, she’s brought somebody... Adam: Yeah, I think they speak secretly, and I think we’re gonna do Christmas together. Abbie is an angel to my nieces. They call her Auntie Abbie. To see her with my niece makes me want to cry, because they adore her. Rightfully so. Abbie treats them like they’re our kids, which is beautiful to see, as an uncle. It’s one thing to have the fun, crazy uncle that dances around on stage like a d***head and gets paid for it, but then to have this beautiful, powerful woman that’s kind of come in as the auntie figure that’s even cooler than that guy that dances on stage – for two young girls, that’s like a home run in the heart. The amount of young women that walk up to me with tears in their eyes and say, “Your girlfriend has changed my life and made me believe I can think how I want to.” [To Abbie] You’ve changed the world for so many people. And you’re not aware of that. She is the North Star for so many young people that feel lost. I get goosebumps even thinking about it. They’ll run up to me across the city screaming with tears in their eyes just because I know her. And that’s insane. Like, you’re incredible. Abbie: You know, women are taught that if they’re loud or political or they’re feminist, no-one is ever going to want them. I think that’s why women love our relationship – because it’s beautiful, healthy and fun. And my feminism isn’t a deterrent for that, it’s actually a huge pull.
